Oscar Micheaux GOD'S STEPCHILDREN

A drama of importance featuring Alice B. Russell (spouse of Oscar Micheaux ) in a heartbreaking story of racial and social incongruence. Race identities are examined through the jaundiced eyes of Naomi, abandoned as a child, who finds the truth of her ethnicity a bitter pill to swallow.

With a new score by Chicago Modern Orchestra Project, Renee' Baker composer.

Whatever It Takes Scholars, LLC Presents

"Art is Business"

A Day at the Derby is a public launch party for WIT Scholars, LLC dba Chicago Surge, a new Chicago-based non-profit organization. The organization was founded by three adult friends who consist of a City of Chicago Bus Driver and father of three; a civil rights attorney; and a Chicago Police Officer, each of whom was born and raised in the City of Chicago. WIT Scholars' purpose is to aid the youth of Chicago and their parents through classes and programs geared toward education, information, and inspiration. Our classes and programs include legal clinics, financial literacy coaching, life skill classes, community sports teams, and academic mentoring to assist in developing the confidence and leadership skills necessary for the youth to become pioneers in our society.

The launch party is Saturday, May 5, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at Gallery Guichard.  Guest will enjoy delicious hors-d'oeuvres and drinks from local businesses, view various art exhibits throughout the gallery, view the derby via various televisions throughout the gallery, learn more about WIT Scholars and our sporting team Chicago Surge, and an opportunity to network with other leaders in Chicago.

To make A Day at the Derby a success, we are seeking partners in the community who have a deep commitment to developing the leadership and communication abilities of young people through sports, education, academic mentoring, and life coaching.  Those who ultimately want to see our youth thrive here in Chicago. Your commitment to serving vulnerable communities and the youth of Chicago makes it an ideal partner of our organization.

All proceeds from this event directly support WIT Scholars, LLC. Please see the attached brochure to see what the sponsorship packages include.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Urban Art Retreat Li Long Gallery

"Art is Business"

Hello, I am Dianna C. Long, Director and curator for Liz Long gallery at Chicago Urban Art Retreat. We are a non-profit organization originally incorporated in 1984. We started out in Portland, Oregon and came to Chicago in 1991. At one point we had gallery space in Andersonville on Berwyn just off Clark. At another point we had gallery space on Adams, one block from the Art Institute.

Our retreat re-structured, and for 15 years now, has been located in North Lawndale to offer supportive services plus a gallery in this area. As you can imagine, we are a very unique organization and facility. We focus on featuring under-represented artists and themes on social justice issues.

In the spring each year we present Artists International: Art by Artists from Anywhere but USA. This year our show will include artists from France, China, Morocco, Mexico, and more. We also believe in and recruit art that is highly affordable. Our Annual Spring Artists International Show will open with a reception on April 14 from 1-4 p.m. The reception is free. The show continues through May 26, when one of the artists who is from Mexico will visit and give a talk about her art. She is Karla Ramirez-Rosa.

I invite people to come see this low keyed art show of artworks from far-a-way places.

Sincerely,

Dianna C. Long, curator & director
