A Message from Ralph Murphy, Closing of Murphy Hill Gallery January 2011

"Art is Business"

We just got word that the entire building here at Homan Square may be closing in January 2011.  The deal to convert the building around us into residential housing seems to have fallen through. The dollars generated from that deal would have allowed the owners to continue for a while. The closing of this building would be devastating to the community.

Let's see what we can do to reverse this process. The management states that the utilities and operating expenses far outweigh the building's revenue.

I am thinking this may be an opportunity to make a move for the creation of a huge movement to save the building and take it out of the hands of the owners, since it is such a loss for them to the point that they want to close it up and displace so many people and their dreams.  We need that building not just for the gallery but for all of the individuals who work there and strive to create a better life for themselves.  I think it will be the key catalyst for the movement. On Monday, we received the Black Excellence Award for Visual Arts.

PLEASE PRAY AND THINK ABOUT WHAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO DO.
