During artist talks, Imani Fatima Detry discusses issues such as ethnicity and identity and focuses on specific forms from all over the world. They are pointing to the many ways of examining the relevance and primacy of dance-related, for instance, issues primacy of dance-related to, for instance, issues surrounding sexuality, human rights, ethnicities, hierarchies, and gender. We will explore the intersection of sexuality, race, and gender-nonconforming individuals who defiantly live their truth in a safe, celebratory space.
Inquiries (1) that women and feminism are central to any queer project; (2) that social dance and concert dance hold equal import; (3) that, through anti-racist and anti-colonial labor, queerness must constantly work on challenging white privilege; (4) that queerness has to challenge the entrenchment of the gender binary; and (5) that queer dance happens across an expansive map, both global and regional.
Spoken word artist Binkey, aka Lawrence Tolefree, will host a three-part series on BEATNIKS giving a platform to discuss these critical issues from the perspective of African dance forms. This can help a person deal with emotional conflicts, become aware of issues, and express unspoken concerns.
